A large volume of material can be thoroughly processed with the deep-deck design:
The deck is suspended from and supported by the machine to provide a level cut. Mower deck wheels and rollers help smooth out the mowing job in uneven conditions and reduce the chance of scalping the lawn:
These rear-discharge decks are designed to stand up to heavy-duty commercial use:
Durability is designed into the mower blade drive system:
Extra reliability and long life are provided by cast-iron blade spindle housings:
Minimal service requirements increase uptime:
Extra convenience and security are provided by a serrated surface that is welded to the top left corner of the deck, providing additional traction when entering and exiting the operator station.
The Z997R and Z998R Diesel ZTrak™ Mowers allow operators to be more productive by locating frequently used controls at the operator’s fingertips.
ZTrak Mowers include large, ergonomically angled control levers with specially padded grips and built-in electronic controls.
To reduce operator fatigue and tailor control sensitivity, the control levers operate the hydrostatic transmissions electrically. These drive-by-wire controls reduce effort needed to operate the handles and enable features like LoadMatch™, which can slow the mower under heavy cutting load, providing consistent cut quality.
Standard comfort and convenience handles are built into the steering levers.
Z997R - The Z997R has three steering-lever buttons. The left steering lever has a button (A) to raise the mower deck. The lift button can be pressed momentarily to raise the deck over an obstacle. The left and right steering levers each have a yellow PTO button (B). Press both buttons at the same time to engage the PTO. Press either button to shut off the PTO.
Z998R - The Z998R has five steering-lever buttons. The Z998R includes the same buttons as the Z997R model, plus there is a button (C) on each lever to raise or lower that side’s E-Cut Wing Mower Deck. Similar to a garage door, each deck lifts or lowers when its button is pressed. On the Z998R model, when the deck raise button (A) is pressed all three decks are raised to clear an obstacle.
The blades on the wing decks automatically stop when the decks are raised. If the PTO is engaged, the wing decks automatically start when the wing mower decks are lowered.
The integrated park brake is automatically applied when steering levers are stowed outward and disengaged when the steering control levers are placed into the operating position.
The key switch and switches for auto throttle (A), center deck control (B), and transport (C) are located near the touchscreen display.
Auto throttle - When the PTO is off, the auto-throttle switch is used to adjust engine speed. Low speed is used when maneuvering the mower in tight locations like loading on a trailer. High speed is used for transport. When the PTO is engaged, the engine runs at full throttle, and the auto-throttle switch is used to limit maximum mowing speed. The low-speed position improves precision while trimming and high speed enables full mowing speed in open areas.
Center deck control - Used to shut off the center mower deck with the PTO engaged; useful when the operator wants to mow with one or both wing decks without the center deck creating noise and stirring dust.
Transport switch - Raises all mower decks to transport position or lowers them to mow at full width.
The Z997R and Z998R Diesel ZTrak™ Mowers are equipped with an advanced 4.3-in. (10.9-cm) full-color LED touchscreen, which provides unprecedented control and information.
Similar to mobile device screens, the touchscreen contains multi-colored pixels. Unlike segment-based displays, a touchscreen can be extensively customized, which enables software-defined menus and supports multiple languages including English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian. The touchscreen is bright so it can be read in sunlight and backlit for low-light conditions.
The touchscreen is designed and tested to withstand the elements. It is IP66 rated, indicating it is dust-tight and protected from water.
The touchscreen provides the operator with:
The touchscreen can be used to adjust machine settings:
The touchscreen can also be used for diagnostics.
The Z997R and Z998R Mowers are factory-configured with a single full-access user profile. Fleet operators may choose to tailor menu access to the unique needs of owners, crew supervisors, and operators. Each user is assigned a PIN that may be restricted from machine settings and diagnostic menus.
A mower can have up to three owner profiles. Owner profiles have access to the following settings:
A mower can have up to 100 unique operator profiles, each with their own PIN that remembers their unique language and machine settings. Each operator-profile setting has access to the display settings menu. Based on the owner’s permissions, each operator may be given access to, or restricted from, accessing the remaining menus. For example, an owner may give crew supervisors and experienced operators access to more settings than less experienced operators.
The Z997R and Z998R Diesel ZTrak™ Mowers include a standard air-suspension seat, which provides maximum operator comfort across a wide range of operator traits.
Key features and adjustments:
A-Armrest height
B-Lumbar (on rear of seat)
C-Fore-aft slide
D-Fore-aft suspension
E-Air-suspension weight and height
F-Damper
G-Back angle tilt
The Diesel ZTrak™ Mowers have an intuitive and ergonomically placed pin map height-of-cut system. The system provides 1- to 5.5-in. (3.8- to 12.7-cm) cutting heights in 0.25-in. (0.64-cm) increments.
On a Z998R ZTrak Mower, keeping the cut height of the wing decks matching the center deck is fast and clean, and does not involve relocating greasy spacers.
The front wing deck caster wheels use a turn-dial system (A). Simply remove the cap and magnetic locking key and turn the dial. The front caster shaft is engraved with height-of-cut markings that indicate the cut height.
The rear mower deck wheels use a spring-locking pin (B). Simply move the pin to adjust the height. The shaft is also engraved with height-of-cut markings.
The entire system is designed to be adjusted without tools in the field. In the shop, a ratchet or power driver can be used to speed adjustments.
The standard comfort and convenience handles include built-in electronic controls to raise or lower the mower deck.
The service points of Diesel ZTrak™ Mowers are easy to see and access:
Hood has one central over-center type latch.
The hood pivots to make the hood easier to remove and install for ease of servicing the engine.
To reduce debris ingestion, the cooling-air intake and radiator of Diesel ZTrak Mowers are located in a clean location in front of the engine. Warm air exits the rear of the mower away from the operator. The radiator screen can be removed for cleaning and to provide access to the radiator, oil, and fuel coolers.
Minimal mower deck drive maintenance requirements increase uptime:
Diesel ZTrak Mowers come with a maintenance label that is conveniently located on the underside of the hood. The label is written on English and Spanish languages and includes daily service check points, approximate fluid capacities, and tire pressures.
To speed access to owner information web pages, a QR code is printed onto a product identification number (PIN) label located under the right steering lever. The owner information web pages that include links to:
The front frame of the Z997M and Z997R Diesel ZTrak Mowers are pre-drilled to accept the optional jack kit and jack:

The durability features of the frame are as follows:
A rear bumper is provided on the machine for rear protection. The bumper is made of compression molded ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene plastic which provides abrasion resistance to protect the machine and the property.
The hydrostatic drive features a Kanzaki® DUP 17SB dual-unitized hydraulic pump. This dual pump, in a single housing, provides longer life and less maintenance than competitive units.
The pump features a shaft-driven fan for added cooling and longer component life. The swash-plate bearings are roller-type versus ball-type bearings for a longer overall pump life.
The transmission module integrates the dual pumps and steering valves in one single housing. The pump is shaft-driven from the engine. An isolator ensures reduced vibration between the engine and the transmission module.
Two wheel motors are installed on the chassis to directly transfer power to both wheels. Commercial-grade, heavy-duty Hydro-Gear HGM18L 17.8-cu in. (292-cc) wheel motors are also important components of the overall drive system efficiency.
Rigid hydraulic lines are installed between the hydraulic module and wheel motors for long life.
An internal wet disk park brake is integrated in the transmission.
Kanzaki is a trademark of Kanzaki Kokyukoki Manufacturing Company. Hydro-Gear is a trademark of Hydro-Gear Limited Partnership.
The spacious operator station has been designed for comfort, visibility, and ease of use:

The JDLink M Modem regularly transmits the location and operational status of each mower in the fleet so you can monitor mowing progress in Operations Center.
The modem regularly transmits the mower’s engine hours to inform maintenance planning and balance use.
Factory or custom maintenance plans can be established in Operations Center. Maintenance alerts are sent when engine hours reach maintenance intervals.
On select products, the modem reports the time the mower spent transporting, idling, and working. The Operations Center’s Machine Analyzer tool reports usage data which allows you to analyze operator behavior, identify causes of low productivity, and initiate corrective actions.
On select products, the modem reports the fuel level. On these products, an analysis of fuel consumption is available in the Operations Center Machine Analyzer Tool. Measuring fuel consumption enables you to address causes of excessive fuel use.
On select products, the modem transmits the trouble codes generated by the mower’s control units to the Operations Center. Addressing DTCs can reduce downtime and repair costs. For example, a low-engine oil pressure DTC can indicate an engine is low on oil. Addressing the issue can prevent costly downtime and repairs.
To help address issues quickly, when a DTC is generated, the Operations Center can display a push notification on the mobile app and send an email. Operations Center can also be configured to limit notifications to stop-level severity DTCs.
On select products, John Deere dealers can perform remote diagnostics, software programming, and adjustments without the cost of a service call.
A JDLink M Modem is standard equipment on model year 2024 and newer (SN 110,001-) TerrainCut Front Mowers and model year 2024 and newer (SN 690,001-) TerrainCut Wide-Area Mowers.
A JDLink M Modem can be field installed on the commercial mowing products listed below. Field installation attachments simplify modem installation, and include brackets, mounting hardware, harness, and instructions. Field installation requires a JDLink M Modem to be ordered separately. The field installation attachments include a wiring harness therefore the modem should be ordered with the less harness option code.

Reviews
I have had this mower for four seasons and what a great machine. I have been developing 17 acres so this mower has seen everything from taking down saplings to manicuring my lawn. I haven’t given it anything it can’t handle. I love the mulch-on demand to keep throwing g grass in window wells and flower beds. The only thing lacking is a powered way of changing to mulch and back. I love the blade speed but beware, it’s hard on blades. I plan on a new set every year. All of my equipment is Deere from compact tractors to utility farm machines and the Z997R measures up to the Deere name.
I had a commercial pro series 1999 Dixie Chopper with a 25 hp Koehler command pro that has approximately 2500 hours and is just started giving me some trouble. So I purchased the Z997R and really like the way it cuts. It has an excellent cut quality. It will go through thick heavy even wet grass with no problem. Its fast forward. I like the rear opening hood (even is removable with just two pins) the seat opens forward to give you wide open access to the engine and transmission. It has large oil and fuel filters with a very large hydraulic revivor plus its very easy to check the hydraulic fluid level. It will cut 6-8 hours on one tank of fuel. Traction seems to be better than my Dixie Chopper, will tear the grass if you turn fast and hard. I think its because of the big rear tires and weight, the tire are 26" x 12" which I like. Ok some of my dislikes. Its slow in reverse only 5 mph. The rear hood screen and coolers get clogged very quickly you have to clean them every time you mow or the hydraulics will overheat ( have not had that problem yet because I clean it every time) The hydraulic tank and the instrument cluster are one large plastic molded piece. It should have been two separate parts. The deck lift does not have any zerk fittings on any of the rotating parts. It squeaks every time its raised or lowered. I can hit it with spray lubricant and within 2 or 3 time cutting its squeaking again.
I had one the only problem with this machine is with a rear discharge the outside of the radiator becomes plugged up and the machine over heats. It needs a reversible fan to keep the radiator cleaned to prevent overheating.
Pros:
I previously owned a 997 diesel Z-Trak mower with the Izusu diesel engine and 60" side discharge mower deck. Thankfully John Deere went back to the Yanmar Diesel engines because it's night and day difference. My new 997R with a 60" side discharge multch on demand deck is so much quieter with the Yanmar engine and is much more powerful and responsive, I ordered the optional seat suspension which I would highly recommend for a larger operator like myself at 6'3" and 300 #. You can't stall this mower in thick grass and the operator station has been upgraded to more user friendly gauges and especially great are the button controls in the erogonomicaly correct designed handles, which raise the deck or stop the mower deck with the simple push with your thumb. Awesome feature ! I also suggest getting the rear bumper option which protects the engine cab completely. John Deere also brought the sides of the machine inward so you don't rub the side of your machine against tree trucks any more like my old 997 did...nice feature too. Highly recommend this machine if you have a large lawn to mow with a lot of trees to mow around !!
Just replaced a diesel SCAG Turf Tiger with this thing. Amazing power behind the 72" deck, no bogging in thick Bermuda. Even at 50-75% throttle I couldn't provoke it to stall.....Unbelievable power, actually!!! This thing is heavy at 1800-ish pounds, but it makes the ride smooth. Ordered mine with Kenda Executioner tires. So much torque on tap, I'd bet it would spin the tires and tear up grass with standard turf tires. Quiet, comfortable, powerful, responsive and love the hydraulic deck lift..... Look forward to mowing my vineyard theses days... :)
